Expats listen to a Chinese-language classat the Shekou Management and ServiceCenter for Expats on Wednesday night.Wei JieA Chinese language class kicked off anight school program initiated by theShekou Management and Service Centerfor Expats (Shekou MSCE) onWednesday night. Nearly 40 expatresidents attended the event, which washeld in the center's activity room.
Some 20 minutes before the class beganat 7 p.m., Brazilian Alexandre Ambrosioand a dozen other expats were alreadyseated in the classroom going over studymaterials.
Although Ambrosio has lived inShenzhen for 12 years, his Chineseproficiency remains basic since English isthe predominant language at theEuropean firm where he works as anexecutive.
"I am beginning to learn the language,and this is a wonderful opportunity," saidthe Brazilian, who has transitioned froman engineer to an executive.
The class began with a young man fromGeorgia named Cao Cao sharing hisChinese learning journey. After a decadein China, he speaks the language fluently,though the different tones are still achallenge.
"I knew only one Chinese word throughGoogle Translate before coming to China,which was ni hao [hello]," he told theclass. "All I did is to keep practicing aftermoving here," said Cao Cao, whoemphasized that speaking the languagehas empowered him to better navigate hislife and work in China.
The class covered basic Chinesecharacters, commonly used vocabulary,and simple sentence structures, whichwere framed within real-life contexts tofacilitate interaction among the expats.
The nonprofit night school program isbased on the former Chinese LanguageClass that the Shekou MSCE hostedtwice a year, according to Rita Yang, headof the center.
The night school program will introducenew sports exchange and cultureexperience modules in October andNovember, respectively.
The sports module will include activitiessuch as badminton, martial arts, andcycling, and allow expats to socialize.The cultural experience module will hostevents like traditional Chinesecalligraphy, Chinese ink painting, andpaper cutting.
The Chinese-language class, held weeklyover a three-month period, will also havea new Cantonese session.
"We hope to create a friendly andinclusive environment for Chinese andnon-Chinese residents in the communitythrough these diverse courses andactivities," Yang said.
